![]() Loved the writing, had to fold it up due to the costs.life, eh? Reviewing background: used to have my own modest fanzine entitled `She Took His Breath Away' which lasted from 1999 through to 2004, and only featured positive reviews. ![]() Buy it and show them some recognition for being one of the best bands this century. ![]() Standouts for me here are Books Written For Girls, Keep It Clean, Lunar Sea and the aforementioned Before You Cry.A Sisters Social Agony has a nice retro vibe so authentic that it makes me think if Camera Obscura were around in the 1960s then they would be as famous and revered as all of the alltime greats. Suspended From Class is a nice opener, and precedes a very easy and comfortable hour or so of listening. Of course, she isn't the only vocalist on show here and the 'duet' Before You Cry is one of their career highlights. The band accompanies her voice here perfectly. They make songs that warm the heart and reward the soul with their arrangements and clever lyrics. The comparison to Belle & Sebastian is inevitable here, but Camera Obscura successfully created their own unique style of their own eventually, and this record shows how Traceyanne Campbell developed her songwriting style. The sound is slightly different to the lavish string production of French Navy, or the reverb soaked Country Mile for instance, it is more acoustic and pared down. If you are more familiar with their most well known albums My Maudlin Career and Let's Get Out Of This Country, and enjoyed Desire Lines, then you need to buy this. Camera Obscura are so underappreciated in my eyes, but maybe that's good in a way. ![]()
